A note from me:

Hello, Dear Reading Friend,

Happy Summer!!! How has your summer been going so far?!? Our summer has been full with swim lessons, piano lessons, rock climbing, church and time with family and friends.

I hope you're finding pockets of time throughout your day to read! We have "Narnia Nights" where I will read a chapter from the Chronicles of Narnia to Michael. There's something magical that happens when you read to your children while they snuggle up against you, right? I'm excited about some Five Star reading for my 8-12 year old friends featured this month in my Youth Fiction section of the newsletter.

As you relax this summer, remember to share the promise from Jeremiah 29:11-14a with someone you love. We live in a world today that's desperately in need of hope. And that hope, my friends, is found only in knowing Jesus Christ!!!

Read it. Believe it. Embrace it. Share it.

I would love to hear from you! You can email me any comments, suggestions or prayer requests at thereadingmom@gmail.com.

Blessings and Happy Reading!!!

Academy, The by J.T. Payne and Ryan Mix is their debut suspense novel which was brilliantly written! I loved the story, the twists and turns in the plot and the depth of the characters (my favorite, of course, was Sylas Ernst!) The story opens up at the 20threunion of Cherrywood Christian Academy’s Class of 1996. This story is narrated by Sylas Ernst, a Senior at Cherrywood Christian and his point of view as a photographer and his observations about the strange things going on behind the scenes at the academy. As he begins to narrate a series of events that take him on a journey that has him questioning everything he’s ever been taught and believed in, you will find yourself drawn in to his insights and musings. His discoveries of major inconsistencies at the academy will put him in danger and what he does to showcase the truth will have you cheering! The ending is engaging and I absolutely loved this story!!! This suspense novel was intentionally written 75% anti-Christian---it will make believers think and non-believers to be drawn in. Nicely done, guys!

After a Fashion by Jen Turano is a historical romance that is charming, hilarious and entertaining! You’re going to love Harriet Peabody! She’s a little bit of sweet and a little bit of feisty with a very interesting childhood background! When a delivery for her employer goes south with a hysterical and difficult client, Harriet is forced to defend herself. Unfortunately for her, she loses her job at the millinery shop. Fortunately for her, she meets Mr. Oliver Addleshaw. But Harriet’s been praying for something wonderful from God for her birthday and losing her job is not exactly what she had in mind! And neither is Mr. Oliver Addleshaw’s business proposition! I loved Turano’s high-spirited characters and their tongue-in-cheek humor and witty banter! Kudos!

Amish Promises by Leslie Gould is a moving story of love, faith and friendship. Joel and Shani Beck and their son have moved to Lancaster, PA to find some peace and recovery. Next door, Eve Lehman is helping her widowed brother take care of his family and is drawn to Shani Beck. The two form a strong friendship despite their cultural differences. However, neither will imagine the complications their two families will have down the road involving heartache but eventually, healing and restoration. This is book one in the new series, Neighbors of Lancaster County.

Dead Dog Like Me by Max Davis is an intriguing story with an impactful story line! As the pastor of a megachurch and a best-selling author, Nick Gregory appears to have it all. But when his son Phillip reveals a horrible secret before his death that costs him his marriage, Nick’s mental health takes a plunge. The final straw is when he nearly kills his beloved dog, Deuce, in a fit of rage and Nick’s board of directors must take swift and severe action which causes him to end it all. Strangely enough, Nick is transported back to 800 BC in the body of a broken man---Mephibosheth, grandson of King Saul. This historical and contemporary story was impeccably written---it’s the story of one man’s desperate need for redemption and one woman’s call to be a Hosea.

Jaded by Varina Denman is her debut novel and the first book in her Mended Hearts Series. This is a book about church hurt and this powerful story is one that can minister to those who have been wounded by the church. Ruthie Turner lives in Trapp, Texas and her future consists of working multiple jobs to take care of her depressed mother. Her cousin is her best friend and looks out for her. When the new pastor in town arrives, Ruthie wants nothing to do with him or his church especially since it was thechurch that rejected her and her mother. But Pastor Dodd Cunningham is unrelenting in his love, kindness and care toward her and her family. This is a story of hope, forgiveness and love. Well done, Varina Denman! This story was compelling, insightful and captivating!

Justified by Varina Denman is book two in her Mended Hearts Series (I love how this worked out to have book one’s review above and book two’s review below it!) where we get to follow former rich girl, Fawn Blaylock’s life after getting kicked out of her parent’s home due to her pregnancy announcement. She’s courageously starting over and never in a million years would she ever expect to be friends with Ruthie Turner and her cousin, JohnScott! But Fawn needs all the friends and support she can have because Tyler Cruz, father of her baby, is determined to win her back at all cost. When he promises to give up his drinking and never lay his hands on her again, Fawn gives in. But it soon becomes apparent that things have not changed with Tyler and Fawn must make a choice that will ignite Tyler’s fury. I am loving this series, friend! This is a moving story about faith, brokenness, healing and hope.

London Tides by Carla Laureano is book two in the Tides of Love trilogy where British culture is prominent and you get to learn more about the MacDonald family. It’s a win-win all around, right?!? Grace Brennan, a conflict photojournalist, has traveled around war torn countries capturing moments in history that sear the hearts of anyone who sees her photos. But her travels in dangerous territory have taken a toll and she returns to London to take care of unfinished business… with her former fiancée Ian MacDonald. Ian gave up everything for love. And the last person he ever expects to see in London is Grace, the woman who stole his heart and smashed it to pieces. This is a lovely story of hope and second chances. Enjoy!

Love Like Ours, A by Becky Wade is a contemporary romance about a free-spirited young woman reunited with her childhood best-friend-turned-brooding-cowboy and thoroughbreds! When Lyndie James returns to her childhood town of Holley, Texas, she is determined to work at her best friend’s Thoroughbred training center. Jake Porter was her best friend growing up but after being scarred during military service, he struggles with PTSD and avoids relationships. Lyndie tries to befriend Jake but he refuses to reconnect. When his frigid attitude finally seems to thaw out, Lyndie sees glimmers of the friend he once was. But it’s Jake’s prize racehorse, Silver Leaf, which may be the key to opening Jake’s heart… or closing it up forever.

One Upon a Summertime by Melody Carlson is the first book in her new series, Follow Your Heart set in New York City. Anna Gordon is stuck. She always envisioned herself working in hospitality in some exotic location but instead, Value Lodge has been her place of employment for the past two years. But then, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes her way and Anna applies for the management position at a fashionable boutique hotel that’s opening in NYC. Unfortunately, Anna does not get her dream job after her interview with the boutique hotel’s owner, Mr. Rothsberg. BUT, fortunately, the boutique’s co-owner, Mrs. Rothsberg hires Anna and soon she’s experiencing life in the big city and her own happily-ever-after. This is a fun summertime read!

Taken by Dee Henderson is everything I expected from a Dee Henderson read---suspense, intrigue and a fascinating twisted plot! Shannon Bliss is ready to put the past behind her and move on with her life. But first, she wants justice and private investigator Matthew Dane is the man who can help her. This compelling story of faith and suspense will take you behind the scenes of a crime family’s operation. And you’ll see how determination, wit and courage will help one woman thrive and not just survive. This was one of my favorite reads! I love that you’ll see a love slowly blossoming through the pages in the midst of a very fast-paced suspense story.

Water from my Heart by Charles Martin stole my heart! It’s a story of second chances, redemption and love. What’s not to love, right?!? Charlie Finn has been on his own since he was 16. He’s brilliant with a degree from Harvard but he’s learned to master the art of making a profit from the vices of others. For forty years, Charlie thrives and manages to keep his duo life a secret from the woman he loves until one fateful day when everything goes wrong. In one night, Charlie loses his fiancée, his business and nearly loses the life of a little girl he adores whose life is now in critical condition. Charlie is determined to right his wrongs. When the opportunity comes to help locate his business partner’s missing son, Charlie makes the journey to Nicaragua. What he finds and discovers will change his life. Forever.

Wood’s Edge, The by Lori Benton is a fascinating historical novel in the new series, The Pathfinder. Benton does a masterful job taking her readers back to 1757. I was captivated from chapter one! The story opens up with chaos at Fort Henry and Major Reginald Aubrey makes a split decision for the sake of his fragile wife that will haunt him for the rest of his life. The horrors of war have taken a toll on everyone and the lives of two families have been changed forever. One will live with the guilt of his decision and the other lives to seek revenge for what was stolen from their family. It will take faith and love before redemption comes.

MAY
2015
A note from me:

Happy May, dear reading friends!!!

Two days ago, I received a book in the mail to review and couldn't get to it until last night. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down until the end! Ever have one of those experiences?!? Thankfully, every one was in bed, the laundry was done, the kitchen cleaned (thanks, honey!) and the party over. Whew. Life has been full since my last posted book reviews!

I feel like 2015 has been a season of change so far. For the past school year, one of the main topics has been all about college. I think we have things figured out for now, but it's been a stressful couple of months...! There are a ton more things going on, decisions to make and lots of waiting which sums up life, right?!?

The one thing that has been a constant is the fact that God is faithful. His promises in Jeremiah 29:11-14a are meant for you. There were times when a situation looked so bleak that I had no choice but to desperately cling onto the promises that God will bring hope. And He has!

Read it. Believe it. Embrace it. Share it.

All Things Hidden by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse is set in Anchorage, Alaska Territory in 1935. I love the characters here!!! Gwyn Hillerman loves being a nurse at her father’s clinic on the Alaskan frontier but wonders if she’ll ever see her mother and sister again, who reside in high society in Chicago. Dr. Jeremiah Vaughan’s entire life and career is turned upside down when he loses both his medical license and his fiancée in one horrible afternoon. When he accepts the offer to help Dr. Hillerman in his growing practice in the isolated Alaskan territory, he never expects to fall for Gwyn. But someone knows about his past and they’re determined to undermine his every move and reveal the truth. And capture Gwyn’s heart. Adventure, faith, forgiveness and the story of love are all found here!

Art of Losing Yourself, The by Katie Ganshert is a book I couldn’t wait to begin reading as soon as I pulled it out of its mailing envelope! If you have a sister (or sisters), you’re going to love this one!!! Carmen and Gracie cannot be more opposite in their personalities and interest. To anyone looking, Carmen has it all. She has a fabulous high profile job, the looks, house and spouse. But Carmen knows better. She’s going through a difficult season in her marriage, personal life and faith. Gracie is a 17 year-old runaway half-sister who is angry at the world and trusts no one. The only thing they share in common is their mutual love for The Treasure Chest. I so got caught up in the emotion of each sister and the stuff they’re both going through individually and collectively. This is definitely a story that will suck you in and take you away to the warm and humid breezes of Florida’s panhandle. [Side Note: I love that Carmen’s character was inspired from the Biblical passage, Ezekiel 37!]

Babylon Contingency, The by Clifford Longley was a riveting read! I love reading anything about archaeology so this was fascinated me from the get go!!! DCI Robbie Peele is investigating a break-in at an English country house. Little does he know that the house contains some ancient clay disks inscribed with an unknown alphabet. Who wants these disks? And why is the Middle East getting involved? The clue to the mystery lies in an abandoned Muslim village in Crete, where horrible things were witnessed by a Victorian explorer, who left diaries written in code. There’s danger and intrigue at every corner and DCI Robbie Peele must keep his wits about him to survive and determine who are friends and who are foes.

Crimson Cord, The by Jill Eileen Smith is a new look into the story of biblical character, Rahab the prostitute. I love these Biblical fiction---Smith gives attention to historical detail and combined with creative storytelling, you have a tale of spies, God’s grace, faith and a daring escape. But what I found most interesting is reading about life after the walls of Jericho come down… for Rahab. Smith does an extraordinary job of filling in the gaps for Rahab’s life with her gift of imagination!

Deadly Echoes by Nancy Mehl is book two in the series, Finding Sanctuary (book one is reviewed below). Sarah Miller is relieved to spend her time teaching the children of Sanctuary and to finally not dwell on the past of her parent’s murders years ago. She gets reunited with her sister and her niece Hannah and looks forward to spending more time together. But when news that her sister has been murdered, Sarah sees similarities between the murder of her parents and the murder of her sister. Sarah learns that her sister has been digging into the past to discover her parent’s murder and now it looks like the murder has struck again. And maybe she’ll end up as the final victim of the Miller family. Sarah must uncover the truth, digging through twenty years of investigation before it’s too late for her. You can always count on Nancy to deliver a good mystery that will have you on the edge of your seat! Whew!

Gathering Shadows by Nancy Mehl is book one in the Finding Sanctuary series. Wynter Evans, a promising young reporter for a television station in St. Louis, Missouri, stumbles across a picture of a boy with an eerie resemblance to her own missing brother. Using her job as a cover, Wynter set out for the place where the photograph was taken… the primarily Mennonite town of Sanctuary. As Wynter searches for the truth, it becomes very clear that someone doesn’t want the truth to surface and will stop at nothing to keep her from uncovering it.

Finding Me by Kathryn Cushman is a gripping story that will stir your heartstrings. When Kelli Huddleston is sorting through her deceased father and stepmother’s things, she stumbles upon a safe containing evidence that everything she thought to be true about her life is a lie. Now she feels compelled to travel across the country to uncover the truth and just maybe discover what happened over twenty years ago. You are going to love this moving story of painful revelation and the truth that will shake a small town apart.

From the Start by Melisa Tagg is the beginning of her new Walker Family series. It’s a contemporary romance that will steal your heart! I love Kate Walker!!! Kate has been trying to write something meaningful again, but she’s hit a wall until she’s given the opportunity to get out of her financial slump and write former NFL quarterback Colton Greene’s memoir. Greene’s budding career has ended early because of an injury and his past is off limits to Kate. But she desperately wants to know the real Colton and not just his play by plays, stories and fame. It will take a lot to get past their wounds and to fight the attraction they have for each other. But there’s a lot of pain to come before any healing can begin. I LOVE this story!!!

In the Shadow of Jezebel by Mesu Andrews is a beautiful and compelling story of the power of unconditional love. Princess Jehosheba desires to please the harsh, and cruel demands of Queen Athaliah, daughter of the notorious Queen Jezebel. When sinister strategies involve her infiltrating the world of Yahweh’s temple, Princess Jehosheba must choose her loyalties wisely. Andrews does an incredible job, once again, of bringing to life a complex and fascinating story featuring major and minor characters from the Bible.

Saintly Killing, A by Martha Ockley is book three in the Faith Morgan Mysteries series. This cozy mystery will have you loving the characters living in Little Worthy. St. James is about to celebrate its 900th anniversary and vicar Faith Morgan has commissioned a new painting of the church from distinguished local artist Sal Hinkley. But not everyone is happy about her decision. Faith has no idea how unhappy they are about her decision until Sal is found dead at her easel---the painting incompleted! Make sure you read this one with a cuppa tea---you’ll need it!

Then Sings My Soul by Amy K. Sorrells was one of my favorite reads! This is a story that weaves seamlessly between the past and present as Nel Stewart struggles to find the full truth about her father, Jakob, a man suffering from dementia. As you read this, I guarantee you’ll get lost in this story as you follow Jakob and Peter’s run for survival as they try to escape with their most treasured possession from their father. I loved the part the Stewart’s played in their lives when they get to America and when Nel hears from Ira Levchenko! This fascinating story is full of mystery, fascinating Ukrainian history, lapidary arts, faith and romance!

Together with You by Victoria Bylin is an emotionally packed story that “takes cues from The Sound of Music.” I am loving Victoria Bylin!!! Her tender contemporary romances have me sniffling throughout the story---they’re packed with emotion and relevant faith issues.  When Carly Mason finds a little girl in her toy store that reminds her of social work past, she realizes that Penny Tremaine suffers fetal alcohol effects. When she reunites Penny with her family, her heart goes out to the little girl. Dr. Ryan Tremaine knows he messed up---first with his marriage, then with his boys and now with Penny. He’s intent on reconnecting with his children and now he’s determined that Carly should be Penny’s nanny. He wants to redeem himself and he needs all the help he can get with Penny’s condition. Carly reluctantly agrees but the guilt from her past is enough to hold her hostage from caring too much. This captivating story about faith, forgiveness, grace and love will entertain AND educate you.

The Tomb: A Novel of Martha by Stephanie Landsem brings to life, Martha, sister of Mary and Lazarus. Hearing Martha’s voice in this story is really fascinating as you watch her story unfold. Known as the “holiest woman in Bethany” in her little town, Martha is carrying a terrible secret that can end her life if it comes to light. Her brother Lazarus has the heavy burden of making sure Martha is financially sound and betrothed when he goes to follow his cousin Jesus. But everything changes when he discovers the lump. And when Martha is forced to reveal her secret because her brother wants to betroth her to Simon, the strict Pharisee, her life takes a drastic turn. This haunting story demonstrates the power of love, forgiveness and grace.

Wonder of You, The by Susan May Warren comes out in June so you’re getting a sneak peak right now! This is the fifth installment in the Christiansen Family series that’s set in Deep Haven. Amelia Christiansen, the most adventurous of her siblings, returns to Deep Haven with a broken heart and broken dreams. But when Roark St. John, heir to a European hotel dynasty, playboy of sorts, master of running from tragedy and the expectations of being a St. John, decides he must win Amelia back, he has no idea how much resistance he will get from those most loyal to Amelia! This is a story about adventure, living the life God intends for you and family matters. You gotta love those Christiansen’s and their tight family bond!!!

Abbot’s Agreement, The by Mel Starr is book seven in The Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon Series and it’s one of my favorite series to read! This one starts out with Master Hugh de Singleton on his way to Oxford in search of a Bible when he discovers the corpse of a young Benedictine from a nearby abbey. In a hurry to return to his wife who is expecting baby #2, Hugh is now detained by the abbot’s commission. The mystery of finding the murderer is frustrating and seemingly at dead ends, but then there’s another mystery of heresy in the abbey itself… Hugh has his hands full! Fans of medieval history and suspense will love this one and this series!!! I love the wit (especially regarding Arthur and the finesse he uses to encourage the brutes to talk!), the fascinating mysteries Hugh manages to stumble upon and the descriptions of food, lodging and clothing.

Esther: Royal Beauty by Angela Hunt is a biblical fiction story of one of the Bible’s most adored heroines. I loved this story of Esther’s life---Angela brought to life the details of what life was like in Esther’s day. One of my favorite parts is when Esther first meets King of Persia, Xerxes! I can totally see this made into a movie with that scene outside his door!!! You’ll be swept up into the world of royalty, secrets and what it takes for one young woman to make the brave decision to save her people.

Instead, she must now be introduced to society in hopes of finding a husband---all because her uncle, the Admiral, believes all women to be created for marriage and motherhood. Love Without End by Robin Lee Hatcher is the second book in the series, A Kings Meadow Romance. I love how Robin writes!!! It’s hard to remember her characters are fictional when I’m in my head in King’s Meadow! You’re going to feel for Kimberly Welch as she struggles to provide for her daughter and herself. You can feel her loneliness and the frustration with parenting Tara (her daughter) as she reacts to the changes that are thrust on her since her father’s passing.  And then there’s Chet Leonard.  He’s doing his best to bring up his sons but the pain of his wife’s abandonment stilI haunts him every day. This is my favorite time of the year. We lost our Advent calendar in the first flood last year but over Thanksgiving, my sister gifted us with theirs since her boys are now older! Every day, Michael gets to put another felt object as he creates the manger scene. I love it!!! It's a daily reminder to keep things in perspective as we prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Christmas is a season of hope and joy! It's why I love Jeremiah 29:11-14a. It's a reminder that God has a plan for YOU. YOU are not alone. And most of all, YOU are loved.
Read it. Believe it. Embrace it. Share it.

I would love to hear from you! You can email me any comments, suggestions or prayer requests at thereadingmom@gmail.com.
Blessings and Happy Reading!!!

 FICTION

Amish Family Christmas, An by Murray Pura is a heartwarming story where forgiveness, second chances and love changes a family’s circumstances. I love how Naomi’s marriage is restored and most of all, I love the bishop’s change of heart! This story goes perfectly well with a cup of your favorite hot beverage and a lovely warm fireplace near your chair :o)

Amish Seamstress, The by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould is part of the series, The Women of Lancaster County. Now Mindy & Leslie are two of my favorite writing partners so I was excited to read this one which came out in August 2013. Izzy Mueller is a talented seamstress. Together, she and her best friend Zed make a great team when they’re working on movie projects. As they dig into their latest movie project which involves their ancestors, Izzy and Zed stumble on a mystery. And to add more complications, Izzy realizes her feelings for Zed are changing. The problem is that Zed is Mennonite while Izzy and her family are Amish. Will their religious differences keep them apart?

Bride in Store, A by Melisa Jagears is set in 1881 where mail-order bride, Eliza Cantrell decides to surprise her intended by arriving a week earlier. But Eliza never dreamed that her timing would be so terrible. Her train gets held up by robbers and all her dowry is stolen. And, when she arrives in town, she is shocked to find that her soon-to-be groom, Axel is missing. Can anything else go wrong?!? While waiting for Axel to return from wherever he is, Eliza intends to help him grow his general store business by helping out in the store with his business partner, Will Stanton. After a not very pleasant encounter with Axel’s father, Eliza soon realizes that things are not what they seem. I love the details Jagears weaves in her story. This is a heartwarming read with an interesting twist!

Covered Deep, The by Brandy Vallance is a historical suspense Victorian novel that was the winner of Jerry Jenkins “Operation First Novel” contest. Thank you, Jerry because this novel was begging to be published for readers like me!!! I loved the details (the Victorian age is fascinating) and the mystery and suspense that builds throughout the story had me glued to its pages. The dialogue is brilliant and the characters are a mixture of mystery and intrigue.  I absolutely adore Bianca Marshal---she wins a unique contest that allows her to travel from southern Ohio to England and then to the Holy Land. She’s searching for her perfect romantic hero who’s out there beyond her hometown. And what she ends up finding is not what she thought true love would be.

Grace in Thine Eyes by Liz Curtis Higgs is set in 1808 and is based on the story of Dinah from Genesis 34. You will love the McKie family---especially Davina. Although she’s lost her voice in a tragic accident, she manages to communicate through her expressions, graceful gestures, writing and through her art and music. When she catches the eye of a handsome young Highlander on Midsummer Eve, Davina is unprepared for the emotions of her heart and the tragic and shocking events that follow. This is a beautiful story of forgiveness and extending the gift of grace.

Making Marion: Where’s Robin Hood when you need him? by Beth Moran is a great debut romance that you’re going to love! Marion Miller comes to Sherwood forest to uncover her father’s mysterious past and to escape her former life. While hoping to get directions for her destination, Marion finds herself at the wrong place at the wrong time. Before she knows it, she is in charge of reservations at the Peace and Pigs campsite! This is one of those stories where “if things can go wrong, they will!” I love the witty dialogue, the charming characters (Scarlett is a hoot!) and this tender coming of age story complete with adventure, secrets, romance and more!

Not by Sight by Kathy Herman begins the series, The Ozark Mountain Trilogy which debuted in May 2013 will keep you on the edge of your seat! This sad story is about a family trying to get over the loss of their missing father and toddler sister. When big sister Abby spies a girl who looks suspiciously like her sister now grown up, she decides to confide in her friend J.D. Abby is determined to find this girl and her investigative hunt leads to threatening phone calls and a dangerous discovery.

Outcast, The by Jolina Petersheim is amazing!!! I am sad I didn’t get to review this when it was released as her debut novel in July 2013, but we were dealing with flood #2 and reviewing books were just not on my mind at the time! Thankfully, I kept this in a drawer with other books to be released at the same time and discovered this gem of a novel! This story is a cross between a modern-day twist of both The Scarlett Letter and the biblical characters Leah and Rachel (daughters of Laban) in Genesis. Of course, I loved both Rachel and Leah Stoltzfus and the character Ida Mae is someone we should all have in our life! This story is set in a Mennonite community where secrets run deep and judgment is plentiful. What I like about this one is the cleverly written plot which is full of surprises. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen…well, it doesn’t! Well done, Ms. Petersheim!

Playing by Heart by Anne Mateer is a “turn-of-the-century” story that takes you to Dunn, Oklahoma where duty takes the place of dreams for Lula Bowman. Forced to return home from a dream position, Lula must help her newly widowed sister and her growing family. When she takes a job at the local school to fill an opening for a music teacher, she never dreams she is required to coach the girls’ basketball team… a game she knows nothing about! Meanwhile, Chet Vaughn, the boys’ basketball coach fervently hopes the new female teacher will leave him alone and not have marriage on her mind like the other single female teachers do. Lucky for him, marriage is the last thing Lula is interested in.  He should be relieved, right? Ahhhh… and that’s when this story gets interesting!

Quilted by Christmas by Jodie Bailey should come with a warning label that says, “Read with caution. Kleenexes needed.” This was one of my favorite reads!!! Taryn McKenna is a character you will love and feel for. She’s been abandoned by her parents and left behind and seemingly forgotten by her high school sweetheart, Justin Callahan. Her grandmother, Jemma has been her rock and Taryn will do anything for her. But when her world is turned upside down by the return of her ex-boyfriend and her grandmother’s accident, Taryn struggles with the secret she’s been holding onto for all these years. This is a beautiful story of forgiveness and hope that you won’t want to miss!

Relentless Pursuit: Secrets of Roux River Bayou by Kathy Herman is the third book in this series. Herman is known for her flawless skill in weaving suspense, fiction and faith together and this one will not disappoint! Sax Henry is searching for peace---specifically, making peace with the sister he left behind when he was seventeen. Meanwhile, people are dying from cyanide contamination and authorities are concerned a bioterrorist is at work. Sounds exciting, right?!?

River, The by Beverly Lewis begins in 1977 where two sisters---both formerly Amish are haunted by their past. When an invitation to attend their parents’ landmark wedding anniversary arrives, both sisters reluctantly return home to Eden Valley. Between unresolved relationships and the need for redemption, Tilly and Ruth have no idea what’s in store for them when they face their family and their families. This story grabbed me from the get go. The need for acceptance and forgiveness are themes that will resonate with any reader.
Secret of Pembrooke Park, The by Julie Klassen was full of surprises, twist and turns that I didn’t anticipate! This Inspirational Regency Romance (Klassen is the top name!) has wonderful details set in 1817. In this story, the Foster family has fallen on hard times and has to sell their London home. When the opportunity to lease an abandoned manor house comes up, it’s the wisest course of action and Abigail must take the responsibility of overseeing the servants and house while waiting for the rest of her family. The mystery of Pembrooke Park has Abigail wondering and searching for the rumored treasure and secret room. This delightful and suspenseful story will take you on an adventure of the mind!

Thief of Glory by Sigmund Brouwer was one of the most intriguing reads with a surprise ending that was shockingly unexpected! This story was inspired by a true story of Brouwer’s father and his time in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) under Japanese rule during WWII. Ten-year-old Jeremiah Prin grows up privileged and his world suddenly comes to a screeching halt when the Japanese invade his world.  Suddenly, the responsibility of taking care of his mother and younger siblings falls on his shoulders as his father and step-brothers are taken away. In prison camp, Jeremiah’s eyes are open to the cruelty and brutality around him. In the midst of sacrifice and pain, there are also glimmers of kindness and generosity. Jeremiah is wise for his years and resilient. This powerful story will touch you deeply.

Five Star Books and More by The Reading Mom
FICTION

Abraham and Sarah by Roberta Kells Dorr is a historical drama that takes you back to the Bible times. Out of all the re-telling biblical-type of stories that have come out in recent years, Dorr has successfully landed on top as my favorite author for this particular genre. There is a historical authenticity to this story that will open your eyes and imagination to what Abraham and Sarah’s lives and faith could have been like during those ancient times. Kudos to Dorr for sharing her masterful story-telling art.

Becoming Bea by Leslie Gould is the fourth book in the series, The Courtships of Lancaster County. Beatrice Zook lets everyone know she is not interested in getting married but not everyone knows that her declaration is masking some deep hurts on the inside. I love Bea---She is a relatable character that you’re going to love, too!!! When a second chance at love comes her way, Bea must decide to trust and depend on God or continue on her path leading to anger and hurt.

Bride for Noah, A by Lori Copeland and Virginia Smith is part of the series, Seattle Brides. Historical fiction fans will love this story set in 1851 where one strong and courageous woman makes the decision to start a new life in the Northwest. Evie Lawrence blindly partners with her employer so she can begin a restaurant and make a life for herself. She never expects to face the challenges of undeveloped land, the Duwamish tribe and difficult personalities! I love Evie’s determination and grit---she’s definitely a force to be reckoned with when she’s got a goal in mind!

Dreaming on Daisies by Miralee Ferrell is the third book in the series, Love Blossoms in Oregon and is the much anticipated follow-up to Wishing on Buttercups. I love the characters in this series---they’re likable and believable! Leah Carlson is a strong and independent woman in spite of her losses. She’s determined to save the family ranch even though it appears as if her father’s debts and heavy drinking habits are taking a toll on their profits and the state of the ranch. When her missing brother shows up again and uncovers secrets that will split the family apart and rock her world, Leah must fight to choose forgiveness. You’ll find a little bit of mystery, love and most of all, hope and redemption.

Finding Mercy by Michael Landon Jr & Cindy Kelley (the sequel to Traces of Mercy) is full-on adventure, danger and intrigue. Mercy has lost her memory because of amnesia and is searching for her true identity while running for her life. Somebody wants her dead and Mercy has no idea why (okay, that’s the scariest thing ever!!!). When Captain Elijah Hale and Isaac find her again, they stumble on a clue to her past and Mercy hopes to regain her memory as she’s back in what should be familiar surroundings. But danger still lurks around the corner and Mercy’s life is at risk. Mercy must come to terms with who she was and the person she is now. This historical romance is set in 1866 and ends with love and hope.

How Sweet the Sound by Amy K. Sorrells is a moving story about three generations held captive by sin before grace, mercy and redemption intervene. Ahhhhh… this is one you’ll not want to miss. Set in Alabama, you’ll meet the Harlan family, the perfect Southern family. But underneath the façade of perfection is a storm brewing and once it erupts, everything will never be the same again. This Southern coming-of-age story is inspired by the story of Tamar in 2 Samuel 13. You’ll be reminded how truth always wins over darkness and there’s always true healing and hope from God. Once you finish this story, don’t miss the “afterwords” section with the interview, book club questions, recipes and more!

Little Bit of Charm, A by Mary Ellis is book 3 of the New Beginnings Series where the King sisters must move past the pain of their parent’s passing toward their futures. Rachel King has made the decision to relocate temporarily from Mount Joy to live with her cousin and husband in Kentucky. Rachel’s love for horses leads her to get a job at a thoroughbred stable there. She never expects to love her job so much or to find love… But, ach, Rachel has to figure out whether it’s worth falling in love with someone outside of her community to follow her heart or hurt the ones at home she desperately loves.

Love Undone, A by Cindy Woodsmall is a gripping story of shattered dreams and God’s immeasurable grace. Old Order Amish Jolene Keim has it all---understanding and forward thinking parents, a wonderful family of 5 siblings, a wedding coming up and a bright future. But in one terrible night, everything changes for the Keim family. And Jolene must make an impossible decision. This story will tug at your heart---there are so many twists and turns in this story that you will be in for a bumpy ride! But the end is so worth it!

Matter of Heart, A by Tracie Peterson takes you back to the 1890’s where Texas born and bred Jessica Atherton stars in this story. As book 3 in the Long Star Brides series, you will love the historical details that transport you back in time single young eligible women are expected to wed and begin having families of their own within a specific time period. Jessica has had her pride wounded when the man she is expected to marry finds another bride. But she realizes that it was a match that was never meant to be and she soon finds herself wooed by two very different men who have captured her interest! It’s between Harrison Gable, a successful young lawyer and Austin Todd, a former Secret Service agent. Which one do you think is the best match for Jessica?!? The one thing I like the best about Jessica is her self-awareness of her flaws! You’ll get to see her mature and move past her former aspirations. Go Jessica!

Miracle in Dry Season by Sarah Loudin Thomas is her debut novel set in 1954. You will fall in love with her characters and her writing style that draw you in to the charming little town of Wise, West Virginia. Perla Long has arrived with her daughter, Sadie, hoping to keep her past behind her, but when a drought comes to Wise, her gifts come to light and her past becomes her present again. This is a lovely story about our need to forgive and be forgiven.

Paige Turned: A Paige Alder Novel by Erynn Mangum was definitely hands down one of my favorite reads ever!!! Mangum’s writing style is good for the heart---you will find yourself laughing out loud (so careful about reading this in public areas!) at Paige Alder’s antics and thoughts! I love Paige---she’s efficient, hilarious, sarcastic, loving and so giving!!! Paige has thrown herself meeting one-on-one with the girls of the youth group all summer long, plus, she’s helping out in two weddings. Meanwhile, her own relationship seems to be going south… especially when things between her and her ex have not been entirely resolved. Only Paige, right??!? You gotta love her :o)

Penny Wise by Neta & Dave Jackson is book 3 in the Windy City Neighbors Series and takes you into the home of another family in the neighborhood---the Jaspers. The Jaspers are an urban family you are going to love (!)---you’ll get a sneak peek into their lives as they juggle crazy schedules while trying to keep up with all the “good things” they are involved in. My heart definitely went to Michelle and the emotions she struggles with were authentic enough to make me forget she’s just a fictional character! I love how Neta & Dave continue the story of their characters’ lives through their unique and innovative storytelling technique of “parallel novels.” The story just continues…!

Pound Foolish by Neta & Dave Jackson happens to be book 4 in the Windy City Neighbors Series (thanks, Dave & Neta for getting this one to me so quickly to review!) where we focus on the Singer family in this neighborhood. I love that we get to see what goes on behind the scenes with Greg, Nicole and their two children as they go through a very stressful season of their life. Between job stress, homeschooling two children and a too friendly male neighbor, Greg and Nicole have their hands full and their hearts in a dangerous place. You’ll have to dig in to find out how God works in their family this season. I don’t know how Neta and Dave do it---they manage to keep all the details of each story and weave it into the next one without getting the facts mixed up! I love reading about a scene and then finding out what each character was thinking of and what prompted them to react in a certain way. I’m a huge fan of  parallel novels (how brilliant is that?!?) but most of all, I love the heart behind these stories from Neta & Dave!!!

Prime of Life by P.D. Bekendam is his debut novel and you are going to love reading this one!!! This is the story of Ben, a janitor at Heritage Gardens, a retirement home. But he’s not an ordinary janitor because he has a secret and the residents of Heritage Garden are determined to find out why he’s been harboring this secret. You’ll come to love the residents---especially the cantankerous ones! The feud between Marvin and Frank are hilarious! I love the “Professor” and his way to observing people around and his ability to cut to the chase. When the director/owner of Heritage Gardens gambles everything away, the residents are in danger of losing their home. But they come up with an ingenious plan and you will love it!!! This is a definite “must read!”

Quaker and the Rebel, The by Mary Ellis is part of the series, Civil War Heroines set in 1861. Lovely Emily Harrison is hiding a secret and Civil War Rebel, Alexander Hunt is determined to discover it. Although they clash in their views regarding slavery, neither can deny the growing attraction between the two of them. When Emily’s convictions cause her to be jailed, Alexander finds he will do anything to rescue his little Quaker. There’s danger, romance and unexpected twists and turns in this historical fiction novel that I know you’ll love!

Solomon’s Song by Roberta Kells Dorr is inspired by the life of King Solomon, the wisest of all kings. It’s a gripping story of love that will pull you in. You will be transported back to the days of an aging King David where friction among his many sons causes pain and destruction. Dorr’s experience living in the Middle East gives her an upper hand as she writes about a culture she has been exposed to. Once again, Dorr has hit a homerun with her historical drama featuring a biblical character who comes alive from Scripture!

Surprised by Love by Julie Lessman takes place in San Francisco during the Gilded Age in 1904. I love reading about this time period in history! Well, Megan McClare returns from a year in Paris and emerges as a confidant and beautiful young woman from the shy young girl she used to be. When she’s suddenly partnered with her former grade school nemesis in an internship, Megan must rely on her childhood hero Bram Hughes for support and advice on forgiveness. Megan realizes her feelings for Bram go deeper, but Bram is committed to another and his father’s shipping empire depends on this union. Meanwhile, Caitlyn McClare must choose between two men and trust becomes the deciding factor. Aaarrgggh! It’s a case of mistaken affections and misconceptions but, ultimately, love will win in the end.

This story goes into the life of a dysfunctional family and goes between Celeste, the Hollywood actress, Marguerite DuFrane, her mother and a formally incarcerated young woman named Dana Lundgren. This story was once of the most intriguing ones I’ve ever read! You’ll find deceit and secrets with twists and turns that will change the course of many lives over the years. But the ultimate result of faith comes forgiveness and the women all find that “the truth will set you free.”

Annie’s Stories by Cindy Thomson is a historical fiction book and is the second in An Ellis Island Series. It’s 1901 and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is creating a lot of excitement in the nation and readers can’t get their hands on the book soon enough. For Annie Gallagher, stories are more than entertainment. They remind her of her storyteller father who died in Ireland. After his death, her life becomes a nightmare until she is rescued and sent to work at a boarding house in New York City. All that’s left of her father are her memories and his special stories he wrote for her. Little does she know that these stories hold a grand secret. This is a story full of mystery and intrigue and a very happy ending!

When Cassia gets a part-time job at a flower shop, then falls in love with a handsome Greek cowboy who happens to be related to… the Rossi family, she knows there’s trouble ahead for all of them!

But Treha’s livelihood is in jeopardy and retired director, Miriam Howard is determined to help her uncover the truth of her past, too. This fascinating story asks the difficult question, “If this is as good as life gets, is that enough?”

Saved from a firing squad by Colonel Aric on Schmidt, Stella begins work as his secretary. Here to Stay by Melissa Tagg is a book I’ve been wanting to read ever since I reviewed her Made to Last. Blake “Blaze” Hunziker has returned to Whisper Shore and Autumn Kingsley is furious. Her dreams of moving to France are well within her reach but she’s anchored to the responsibilities of running her family’s inn. When a surprise potential investor comes to town, Autumn is certain he’s the one to help her realize her dreams but she only has two weeks to get things ready at the inn.  As you can imagine, things will get complicated! I loved this story and can’t wait for more from Tagg!!!

Love Comes Home by Ann H. Gabhart follows Angel Sister and Small Town Girl. It’s the end of World War II and the neighbors of Rosey Corner, Kentucky cannot wait to welcome their soldiers home. Especially Kate, who cannot wait to start a family with Jay! Evie longs for a beautiful house and for her husband to pastor a big-town church. But Tori struggles with the loss of her soldier husband who never came home and little Lorena is growing up and wondering more about her birth family. I love how the Merritt sisters come together and grown in their faith while celebrating the ups and downs of life!

Match of Wits, A by Jen Turano brings back favorite characters Agatha Watson and Zayne Beckett! It’s 1883 and Agatha is traveling as a reporter with the New York Tribune and because of her articles and her seamless ability to stumble into trouble, she’s accompanied by a chaperone and a body guard! I love the adventures Agatha gets caught up in---her disguises are hilarious! She sees Zayne as a project and Zayne sees her as a project and before you know it, sparks begin to fly!

Princess Ever After by Rachel Hauck book 2 in The Royal Wedding Series. Regina Beswick has always played princess with her grandmother. Now she’s grown up and has left her CEO job to run a classic auto restoration shop. When Tanner Burkhardt, the Minister of Culture for the Grand Duchy of Hessenberg enters her life, Regina’s world is turned upside down with his announcement. Regina must discover the truth about her heritage and goes on an adventure that includes sinister plans to abolish the throne and finding true love.

Promise Kept, A by Robin Lee Hatcher was one of my favorite reads! Robin writes with such heart and it’s impossible not to fall in love with her characters. Allison Kavanagh has given her marriage over to God. As she learns to stop enabling her alcoholic husband Tony, she finds a new home in her Great Aunt Emma’s mountain cabin. Allison, Tony and their daughter Meredith must all learn to adjust to their new “normal.” And as Allison heals, she rediscovers her Great Aunt Emma’s secrets through her journals found in the attic. I love the mystery of Great Aunt Emma’s life and reading excerpts from her journals made her so real. Read this one with a box of Kleenexes nearby because you’re going to need it!

Shining Light, A by Judith Miller is the third book in the Home to Amana series. Andrea Wilson and her young son Lukas finds refuge with the Amana village and its community when her abusive husband dies at sea and leaves them with barely any means to survive. As time goes on, Andrea and Lukas are able to settle into a comfortable routine rooted in serenity after a chaotic past. And finally, happiness and love are within reach until shocking news rocks their world. I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat as I finished this one!

Silenced by Dani Pettrey is book four in the Alaskan Courage series. This story features Kayden McKenna, a professional rock climber who happens to discover the dead body of another climber. But Kayden senses there’s something more than just an accident and as she and Jake Westin Cavanagh work together to find the murderer, it’s apparent their lives are in danger. There are twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of the seat and just when you’re sure you know who’s behind the threats, they have a rock solid alibi. If you want suspense, mystery and heart-pounding danger, you’ve found the right read!

Story Keeper, The by Lisa Wingate comes out in September 1 and after reviewing it, I couldn’t wait to add it!!! Jen Gibbs, a New York editor find an anonymous manuscript on her desk which captures her attention. Soon, she is immersed in the world of Sarra, a mixed-race Melungeon girl trying to survive in the turn of the century Appalachia. As Jen reads more, she notices faint parallels between her own and Sarra’s life. The journey Jen takes to discover the mysterious author will take her back to a place she thought she had left behind---the past that threatens to undo her. I love the importance Wilda Culp’s had in Jenn’s life---I’m inspired to be a Wilda in someone’s life. Jen’s journey back to the Blue Ridge Mountains will change her forever as she learns to accept her past while moving forward with her life. I loved this moving story---both Jen’s and Sarra’s and I guarantee it will touch your heart.

Under a Blackberry Moon by Serena B. Miller is set in 1868 and is a moving story about a young Chippewa woman named Moon Song who is determined to return to her people. Her friend Skypilot accompanies her on the long and treacherous journey never guessing they will survive an accident leaving only three of them alive. I loved reading about Moon Song’s ability to live off the land and about her survival skills she’s learned from her grandmother. Miller does an extremely excellent job of taking her readers on a journey of the heart.

Until I Found You by Victoria Bylin captured my interest from the very beginning! Swerving to avoid hitting a California condor marked 53 in bold print, Kate Darby fishtails off a mountain road and ends up over a cliff. But luckily, that’s not the end of the story. Her knight in shining armor is Nick Sheridan and over time, their paths continue to cross as they both help Kate’s grandmother run her newspaper. Kate and Nick are so meant for each other! Unfortunately, circumstances, faith issues and careers keep them apart...but you have to wonder, but for how long?!? You’ll read more about the condors and Kate’s family history with them and go with Kate on her spiritual journey as she grapples with faith and trust issues.

When I Fall in Love by Susan May Warren is the third book in the series, The Christiansen Family and their life in Deep Haven, Minnesota. In this story, the focus is on aspiring chef Grace Christiansen, the one who loves predictability and stays away from adventure. When her loving family gives her the gift of a cooking retreat in paradise, her “safe” world turns upside down! Warren artfully draws in her readers as we all peek into the joys and sorrows the Christiansen family goes through. It makes you feel like you’re a part of their family! Grace survives the retreat with a broken heart and the confidence to live her life fully instead of hiding in her shell. You’ll love how the story ends!!!

With Every Breath by Elizabeth Camden is a mesmerizing story about statistician Kate Livingston and her work with a former school rival for the cure for tuberculosis. But Dr. Trevor Kendall is hiding a secret and Kate is determined to find out what he’s hiding. When his secrets seem to threaten the future, Kate is relentless in searching for clues to his past. This story is about love and has danger, mystery, and suspense! But, faith will play a huge part in helping Kate learn to trust God with her fears even when death is just a breath away.

Child of Mine by David & Beverly Lewis is definitely one of my favorite reads ever!!! I loved getting pulled into the story as Kelly Maine desperately searches for her kidnapped baby and then as Jack Livingston struggles to be both parents’ to his eight-year-old niece while Laura Mast struggles to get over the loss of her one true love. There are great plot twists that totally blew my mind and the ending was a surprise! I loved every moment of my time spent in the little town of Wooster :o)

Dancing Master, The by Julie Klassen (one of my favorite authors!!!) is a Regency-set novel which will take you on a journey to Beaworthy, Devonshire, England. This one is filled with mystery, romance and exquisite dresses! When dancing master and fencing instructor, Alec Valcourt and his mother and sister move to Devonshire for a fresh start, he is shocked to learn of the village’s ban on dancing. Julia Midwinter is determined to learn how to dance against her mother’s wishes and she can’t help finding herself attracted to Mr. Valcourt. But her mother is the village matriarch and she’s guarding a secret that Julia is dying to uncover. Will their relationship be broken forever or will there be a way to breach the gap between them?

Forever Amish by Kate Lloyd completes her Legacy of Lancaster Trilogy. Sally Bingham needs a place to get away. All her life, she has felt incomplete---she longs to know more about her mother but her dad refuses to give her any answers. When Sally’s getaway plans to a B&B fall through, she ends up in the home of a family struggling with issues they wish to hide. I love Sally’s character, her devotion to her dad and seeing the Amish community through her “English” point of view. This is a powerful story about family matters, secrets and forgiveness.

Home for My Heart, A by Anne Mateer reminds me of Janette Oke’s writing style. Sadie Sillsby works as the assistant at the Raystown Home for Orphan and Friendless Children. She and her beau, Blaine are saving up and planning for their own “happily-ever-after” until Sadie is faced with a decision that will force her to choose the children or her future with Blaine. This heartwarming historical fiction will take you to another time and place and remind you of a classic by O. Henry.

It Had to be You by Susan May Warren is the second book in the Christiansen Family Series. This one focuses on a different member of the Christiansen family---Eden. I can empathize with Eden. As the big sister, she has always looked out for her younger brother Owen who’s been destined to do great things in hockey. Now as an NHL rookie, Eden continues to be his biggest cheerleader, protector and clean-upper. When a reckless decision lands Owen in the hospital, Eden has to come to grips that she can’t protect him from everything. And she’s got to stop putting her life on hold and do some letting go... This is a story that will remind you that God is writing His story in your life.

Meant to Be Mine by Becky Wade was a fun read!!! Celia Park has always found Ty Porter irresistible. When the opportunity to see him again comes up, she has no idea that she’ll be swept up in a whirlwind romance that involves a wedding chapel in Las Vegas! And then reality sets in. Five years later, Celia puts aside her dreams so she can rear her daughter and then the unthinkable happens… Celia crosses paths with Ty Porter again. You’re going to love finding out what happens!!!

Midwife,The by Jolina Petersheim is an intriguing story opening up the controversy issue of surrogacy that will keep you reading on the edge of your seat. When a young surrogate mom is confronted with the decision to end the pregnancy because of possible abnormalities, she flees. But not before contacting an Old Order Mennonite midwife she met before. The best solution is to go to the Dry Hollow community where Hopen Haus is run by the Old Order Mennonite Church for unwed mothers offering them privacy and care. This story is about hope and redemption and what it means to be a mother.

Pelican Bride, The by Beth White is set in 1704 where Genevieve Gaillain and her sister head for the Louisiana colony as mail-order brides. Both are escaping religious persecution, but one harbors a secret that is life-threatening if uncovered. White does a fantastic job of giving us a view of the harsh realities of the colony---totally different from the ones the girls were given before their arrival! You’ll find love, betrayal, deception and an unshakable faith and courage in this first book in the Gulf Coast Chronicles Series.

Return to Me by Lynn Austin is the first book in The Restoration Chronicles that brings to life the books of Ezra and Nehemiah from the Bible. This is the story of Babylonian exiles Iddo and Zechariah, their wives, their families and those faithful followers who are willing to risk returning home. But the journey is not without struggles and hardship and each person must walk by faith as they leave their comforts and everything familiar to them. I love how Lynn takes you back to ancient Jewish life with her rich and vivid descriptions.

Somebody Like You by Beth K. Vogt is an intriguing story that I couldn’t put down once I started it! So far, I’ve loved everything Vogt’s has written! This story is a sad, tender and beautiful story about second chances and love. Haley’s three-year marriage to Sam ends tragically in Afghanistan. During their marriage, she was the perfect “army wife” but struggles with the fact that maybe she wasn’t enough for him to want to stay home with her. You can only imagine how flabbergasted she is when she meets Sam’s estranged mirror twin brother, Stephen! Eeks! This is a story that your heart will be drawn to and leave you wanting more.

Tattler’s Branch by Jan Watson is about a small town doctor in Skip Rock, a tiny coal community in the Kentucky mountains. Lilly Corbett’s neighbor, Armina discovers something horrific while berry picking one day. Through a series of mysterious events, she discovers a baby but loses her memory over the events leading up to finding the baby. But someone is determined to get the baby back and he’ll do whatever he has to do no matter what. I can sum this up with the phrase, “mystery, adventure and murder in the midst of faith and reliance on God!”

Five Star Books and More by The Reading Mom

FICTION

An Open Heart by Harry Kraus is a gripping medical thriller. I had the opportunity to interview him years ago at a convention and one of the things I love about Harry is his heart for God. He’s a board-certified surgeon and a medical missionary to East Africa. And in between, he writes these amazing stories that take you into the operating room and beyond! In this story, Dr. Jace Rawlings is a famous open-heart surgeon whose life takes a drastic detour when his world is rocked by scandal which affects his marriage. He returns to his childhood country of Kenya to establish a heart-surgery program for the poor and while there, he’s thrust into life-threatening danger, political intrigue and spiritual warfare while he faces his past and contemplates his future. This one is definitely a Five Star read!!!

Blowing on Dandelions by Miralee Ferrell begins a new series, Love Blossoms in Oregon. This powerful story begins in 1880 where a young widow, Katherine Gallow must raise her daughters and run a boardinghouse alone. Life is not without pressure, but there's peace in their household until Katherine's controlling and outspoken mother comes to live with her. This story resonated with me and is a great story about mother daughter relationships, parenthood and faith! I loved it!!!

Born of Persuasion by Jessica Dotta is book one in a new Victorian series that's full of intrigue and deception. It's 1838 and seventeen-year-old Julia Elliston is orphaned and at the mercy of her anonymous guardian. But a titled dowager makes a deal with her and suddenly, Julia's prospect for marrying into society seems brighter. They take a trip to meet a mysterious friend of the dowager and stay with him in a beautiful mansion in a remote location filled with priceless art and interesting rooms. There, Julia is informed how her life is in danger, and suddenly, there are so many twists and turns in this story! Her past, present and future come to haunt her and Julia must figure out whom she can trust with her life.

Caught in the Middle by Regina Jennings is set in 1880 and opens up with a train robbery. Anne Tillerton is determined to talk the runaway cook into returning to the depot so she can go back to working as a buffalo hunter. Nicholas Lovelace is working on a business deal when he and Anne collide. When unusual circumstances throw them together, sparks fly between the unconventional-society-hating buffalo hunter and commercially and soon-to-be politically successful Nick! This one is full of adventure, faith and hard choices.

Chasing Hope by Kathryn Cushman is a story of second chances and… hope. Inspired by Eric Liddell, Sabrina Rice has worked hard committed to her Olympic dreams, but after receiving a life changing diagnosis, her dreams disintegrate. The day she sees Brandy Philip’s running across the college campus begins a chain of events Sabrina never imagined. This story will definitely inspire you!

Claudia: Wife of Pontius Pilate by Diana Wallis Taylor is filled with drama and romance. I appreciate all the research Taylor puts into her novels. Her story takes you on a journey into the world of a illegitimate and exiled daughter of Caesar Augustus. During her mother’s exile, Claudia is protected in a guarded villa until she is forced away from her mother and grandmother and taken into the palace in Rome. There, Tiberius dictates her life and eventually, she becomes the wife of Lucius Pontius Pilate. This fascinating story is captivating!

Color of Hope, The by Kim Cash Tate is the follow-up to Hope Springs. This story will touch your heart on a deep level as you journey with Stephanie London to the small southern town of Hope Springs where racial and cultural ties run deep. As I read this story, I could feel the racial tension at Calvary Church. This town and its inhabitants feel real as they struggle over reconciliation and redemption.  When tragedy strikes involving a young woman and a video gone viral, it has the potential to destroy the community… or unite it. Get your box of Kleenexes ready because you’re going to need it!

Dead Lawyers Tell No Tales by Randy Singer is a legal thriller that will have you reading on the edge of your seat! Landon Reed has a lot to prove as an ex-con turned lawyer and Harry McNaughten is giving him his one chance to make it. When the firm takes on a high profile murder case, strange things begin happening. Landon must do everything he can to survive while protecting his family and his job. This is a novel that's thought-provoking about second chances, redemption and hope.

Death by the Book by Julianna Deering is a cozy mystery (my favorite kind!!!) and the second book in the series, A Drew Farthering Mystery. Okay, if you’re a fan of Agatha Christie and the romantic early 1930’s era (think Downton Abbey), you’ll love this one as much as I did! Drew is hoping to be engaged by the end of the summer but there are two obstacles. One being Aunt Ruth and the second being his not-yet-fiancée Madeline Parker who hasn’t decided to accept his proposal of marriage… yet. But then, Drew goes to meet with his family solicitor and finds him murdered with a cryptic message on a note pinned with an antique hatpin. But the murders continue---each with a cryptic message pinned with another antique hatpin. Drew, Madeline and their friend Nick Dennison must solve the case before the Hatpin Murderer strikes again in their village. You’ll find a lovely combination of danger, romance and suspense in this cozy mystery.

Fearless Hope by Serena B. Miller was a book I couldn’t put down once I started it! Best-selling crime writer Logan Parker has hit a huge wall of writer’s block and the time is ticking as the deadline for his next best-seller looms in the near-not-so-distant future.  When the opportunity to travel with his fiancée on a trip to Amish Country comes up, Logan Parker takes it. As they drive by old Amish farmhouses, Logan is struck with an unexpected deja vu experience as he feels compelled to turn into a lane that leads to a large farmhouse for sale.  The same strange feeling comes to him again as he tours the old house even though he has no recollection of having been there before... [cue music to The Twilight Zone theme, right?!?]. On a whim, he eventually  purchases the old farm house and takes a retreat there so he can focus on writing again. Meanwhile, recently widowed Hope Yoder is desperately trying to find a way to support her young family. When she accepts Logan’s offer as a housekeeper, it appears her prayers have been answered. But something strange is happening as Logan experiences more deja vu moments and the one person who can unlock the mystery is not talking. Yet. You’re going to be hooked too!

In Plain View by Olivia Newport is the second book in the series, Valley of Choice. Annie Friesen is struggling to learn German and get used to leaving her former English life. As she and Rufus Beiler build their relationship, a new family moves into town and suddenly, the possibility of losing Rufus to a genuine Amish woman become a reality. When she’s not working in her store selling antiques, Annie spends her spare time researching family lines and what she learns surprises everyone. I find it fascinating that Newport is related to Jacob Byler, son of pioneer Jakob Beyeler (you’ll read about them in the geneology books Annie finds).

Jennifer: An O'Malley Love Story by Dee Henderson presents the untold story of the youngest O'Malley sibling. Jennifer is too busy working to fall in love, but somehow, surgeon Tom Peterson wins her heart. Now she can't imagine a life without him but introducing him to her six other siblings will be tricky. I loved this story because you get to watch Jennifer fall in love with Tom in slow motion!

But a life changing result will change everything and Jennifer and Tom will find their faith tested in a the most unimaginable way. Her story continues throughout the O'Malley series in The Negotiator.

Love’s Awakening by Laura Frantz is the second book in the series, The Ballantyne Legacy where the youngest child of Silas and Eden Ballantyne, Ellie has returned to her family home in Pittsburgh. Grateful to have completed her finishing school training, she arrives and finds her parents away on a long trip and unwanted by her siblings. When she opens a day school for young ladies, she never imagines that she will be tutoring the daughter of the enemy Turlock clan. Nor does she expect to fall for Jack Turlock… I love the authentic historical detail Frantz gives us in her stories---her characters jump off the pages (especially Andra’s snooty disdain when she sees how Ellie has arrived!) and the struggle between love and loyalty are emotionally charged.

Love Comes Calling by Siri Mitchell was a great read I loved!!! Ellis Eaton has her heart set on Hollywood. She is impulsive and a hoot and you will definitely love her!!! All her life, she’s felt like she’s disappointed her traditional Boston family. Now when rumors come that she’s captured the eye of her best friend Griffin Phillips, she knows she will probably disappoint him too. And so she does everything to avoid heart-to-heart conversations with him. When an unusual opportunity comes for Ellis to work shifts at the city telephone exchange, she takes it. While trying to remember the significance of all the different jacks, cords, lights and switches, Ellis accidently overhears a conversation that indicates her very own Griff is in danger. And Ellis fears for his safety. Oh dear. With her job on the line and her superhero mode in gear, Ellis and everyone else is in for the ride of their life!

Match Made in Texas, A: A Novella Collection by Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connealy, Regina Jennings and Carol Cox was a fun read! These four stories are set in 1893 where a secret matchmaker is busy setting up couples with a little nudge and a timely classified ad! I got so caught up with each story and their interesting characters that I forget that there were four different authors involved! Well done!!!

Minding Molly by Leslie Gould is book three in the series, The Courtships of Lancaster County. I love Molly Zook! She’s spunky, capable and a control freak! It’s up to her to marry well so she can save the family farm. The solution seems to be found in Mervin Mosier, her mother’s choice (and best friend Hannah’s former beau), but Molly has her eyes on someone else….Leon Fisher of Montana. So, Molly decides to take matters into her own hands. She organizes a weekend camping trip to get Mervin and her best friend Hannah back together but things go wrong from the very beginning! Molly has to learn to let God handle the twists and turns of her life instead of trying to control everyone and everything around her.

Most Peculiar Circumstance, A by Jen Turano promises adventure, danger and love in this historical novel set in 1880. Miss Arabella Beckett finds herself in trouble while supporting her favorite cause---the women’s suffrage movement. I love Arabella’s spunky spirit and the trouble she manages to stir up while being in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Once Upon a Winter’s Heart by Melody Carlson is a Valentine’s novella that will warm your heart even though Valentine’s Day is over :o) Emma Burcelli has given up on love. Her grandfather was the last true romantic and her grandmother Nona is brokenhearted. Emma quits her job to be with Nona and work in the family bookstore. When she meets Lane, her sister’s friend, the possibility of love and romance resurfaces. Until she finds out that someone else may have captured his heart… and Emma is left to wonder if she’ll ever find true love.

Perfectly Matched by Maggie Brendan is book three in the series, The Blue Willow Brides. When Anna Olsen becomes a mail-order bride, she moves to Denver to meet her husband. But their personalities are totally opposite and Anna wonders how she will survive her marriage! It starts with “the list” and Anna is certain she will never meet Edward’s expectations! It isn’t until she stumbles on another Edward’s own “list” that things start to slowly thaw in her heart. This is a sweet story that will touch your heart.

Rachel by Jill Eileen Smith is a part of the series, Wives of the Patriarch. This is the story of love, betrayal, deceit and jealousy! Yet, God’s hand is woven throughout the course of history---even in less than ideal circumstances.  I empathized with the struggle between Rachel and her older sister Leah as they vie for the attention of their husband, Jacob. I love the biblical research of those times, the food, the custom, etc. fused with Smith’s imagination!

Rise & Shine: A Contemporary Fairy Tale by Sandra D. Bricker was one of my favorites! The good news is that you’re going to LOVE this story (especially Shannon!)! The bad news is that you won’t be able to purchase this one until May! But I promise it will be worth the wait!!! After waking up from a ten-year coma, Shannon Ridgeway  has to reorient herself to life in the now and the basic skills of mobility and the process of remembering what happened before the accident…The challenges she faces are daunting but you can’t help but applaud over her courage! You can only imagine, right?!? Bricker does an incredible job of taking the reader into the life of a coma and trauma victim especially when matters of the heart are involved. Look for this one in May :o)

Shades of Mercy by Anita Lustrea and Caryn Rivadeneira begins a new series, A Maine Chronicle. Set in 1954, this fascinating story is about a forbidden relationship amid racial tensions in the Maine Northwoods. Mercy is the son her father never had. But she’s growing into a lovely young woman and her heart has been given to Mick. But when racial tensions grow between the men in the town and the Maliseet, Mick gets thrown in jail under suspicion of murder. The hope Mercy harbors about going public one day about her relationship diminishes quickly. And her conversations with Mick’s brother, Joseph opens her eyes. Can change come when there’s so much hate? This is a thought-provoking story and I look forward to reviewing book 2 when it’s available.

Simple Change, A by Judith Miller is the second book in her Home to Amana Series. It’s 1881 and Jancey Rhoder has a lovely life in Kansas City. She volunteers at the local orphanage teaching children and is passionate about helping each child learn on their level. She has a suitor and loving parents but when her mother’s health declines, her parents decide to sell everything and move back to the Amana Colonies. Jancey is faced with a dilemma---leave the only life she’s known or follow her parents to a simpler world where life revolves around rules and the bells.

Stealing the Preacher by Karen Witemeyer is a hilarious blend of history, romance and definitely humor. While Crockett Archer is on his way for an interview for his first preaching post, his train is overtaken by bandits and he’s taken as a hostage by a band of out-laws. Along the way, he learns he is to be the birthday present for the ringleader’s daughter! You’re going to love this one!!!

Talent for Trouble, A by Jen Turano is a really fun read with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments because of Miss Felicia Murdock! This story is set in 1881 in New York City and I love all the details of the wealthy society’s homes, clothing and companions! When things are not going in the way she planned, Felicia Murdock has decided to stop pretending and make choices that will horrify her mother! Now, it’s up to Lord Sefton to come to the rescue. Or not.

I’m becoming a huge fan of Jen Turano’s story---I love that they all include a bit of mystery, danger, adventure and love!!!

Wildwood Creek by Lisa Wingate is an intriguing story and book 4 in the Moses Lake Series. This story had me hooked since I’m a huge fan of mysteries in history! In this one, Allie Kirkland has landed a job as an assistant in the costuming department with Mysterious Historydocumdrama which may be just the start she needs for her dream career in the business.  The cast chosen will be reenacting what happened at the legendary frontier settlement of Wildwood in 1861. Will history repeat itself or will Allie find the truth about the real Wildwood and its famous inhabitants?

Instead, she works in a closet as a "material girl" (seam ripper and hem fixer)in a high end bridal boutique run by a mad man, her boss. Gabi fantasizes of the day when her dreams come true. You know, we can all use some encouraging friends like Bella Neeley and Scarlet Lindsey! I love how they rally around Gabi and reach out to her when trouble strikes her career and heart. This is a delectable read (hmmmm... I must be thinking of all those extravagantly decorated cookies and cake Janice bakes and decorates!!!)!!! :o)

Face of the Earth, The by Deborah Raney is an emotionally gripping story of one man's search for his missing wife. Deborah does such a skillful job painting Mitchell Brannon's desperation to find his wife that you can nearly physically feel his pain and heartache. You definitely need to read this one.

Heiress of Winterwood, The by Sarah Ladd begins a new series, Whispers on the Moors. This story is set in England in 1814 where Amelia Barrett has promised to raise her dying friend's baby. When the child vanishes, Amelia and the child's father must put aside their differences and find the baby. Danger and deception will keep you on the edge of your seat as you dive into this story.

Icing on the Cake, The by Janice Thompson is book #2 in the Wedding by Design Series where Scarlet Lindsey, baker extraordinaire, stars in this one. Thanks to Aunt Willy's financial support, Scarlet gets to make her dreams come true with her bakery, Let Them Eat Cake! And with Bella and Club Wed's support, Scarlet's success is on the rise. She has a great family, a booming business and a nice guy in her life. What more does a girl need, right?!? But then the wild, brash and dashingly handsome Armando enters her world and Scarlett's heart is turned upside down!

If the Shoe Fits: A Contemporary Fairytale by Sandra D. Bricker has a happily-ever-after ending!!! Julianne Bartlett has a childhood best friend, Will, who knows she's been watching for her own Prince Charming her entire life. So it's a little disconcerting to watch her throw herself at a man she's certain is "the one." Especially when Will harbors a secret... and Julianne doesn't have a clue. You gotta love her---she's aggravating, single-minded, tenderhearted, a hopeless romantic and loveable!!!

In Broken Places by Michele Phoenix is one of my favorite reads ever!!! This story will touch the deepest places of your heart because Phoenix is a survivor. And so this story begins... All Shelby can remember of her father is the terrible abuse she, her brother and mother suffered. Now, she's been launched into motherhood by way of her father's final gift to her. Shayla. This story is about hope, redemption and love that blasts away all barricades. I know you'll love it, too.

Made to Last by debut author Melissa Tagg was a fun read! Tagg takes you into the world of Miranda Woodruff, host of her own homebuilding TV show, From the Ground Up. You can nearly feel Miranda's desperation when her closely guarded life begins to unravel! It's a great first novel that's funny and sweet!!!

Message on the Quilt, The by Stephanie Grace Whitson is the third book in The Quilt Chronicles. Emilie Rhodes is yearning to write "real news." When she's fired by her newspaper editor father, she begins writing anonymously for her father's competition and meets Noah Shaw, "The Man of Many Voices." Noah is on a quest to unlock the secrets of his past. All Noah has is a quilt from his mother and learning the secrets of the quilt can either give him hope or crush him with despair. You'll want to find out more about Emilie and Noah, so enjoy this historical novel!

Millie's Treasure by Kathleen Y'Barbo is part of the series, The Secret Lives of Will Tucker. It's 1888 and Pinkerton agent, Kyle Russell is determined to find and capture Will Tucker. But a special secret assignment detours him from his endeavor. When his paths cross with Millie Cope and her soon-to-be fiancee, Russell is more than curious. She may be the key... You're going to love Millie and her spirit of adventure!!!

Misery Loves Company by Rene Gutteridge is a suspenseful novel with an unexpected ending. This was definitely an intriguing read. Widower and book reviewer Jules Belleno has been kidnapped. Now, face to face with her abductor, she must figure out what he wants from her while trying to come up with an escape plan. And what she discovers in the process will change everything she knew about herself, her faith, her husband's death... and her abductor.

Offering, The by Angela Hunt is a thought-provoking and captivating read. It's why she's one of my favorite authors ever!!! Amanda Lisandra and her soldier husband aren't able to start their family yet because of financial issues. So when the opportunity to earn money as a gestational carrier for a childless couple comes, Mandy takes it. She is thrilled to be pregnant and as her term is nearly coming to a close, an unexpected tragedy happens. Devastated by her grief, she hands over the child she's carrying. But two years later, one photograph changes everything and Mandy's world is shaken when she realizes how much the little boy she gave away resembles someone familiar... This one is definitely the perfect choice for your reading group (there's some great group discussion questions in the end)!!!

Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck begins her new Royal Wedding Series. This is a modern-day fairy tale that begins in the most unconventional way---a break-up. Susanna Truitt is expecting a marriage proposal from her love of twelve years. Instead, he breaks up with her because he's found his "true love" and it's not Susanna. Sad, right?!? But this story involves a chance encounter with a prince that can only lead to nothing because he's royalty and she's, well, ordinary. You're going to love this one!!!

Paige Rewritten by Erynn Mangum is the second book in the Paige Alder series. Can I just say I love Erynn Mangum?!? Her stories never fail to make me laugh out loud while addressing important faith issues, too!!! Paige is stuck. She's dating a nice dependable guy when her old flame shows up and adds confusion to her seemingly placid life. Then her sister drops in from out of nowhere. Paige is filled with resentment from the history they share. And now she's at a crossroads. Will she? Or won't she? You're going to love this one!!!

Paige Torn by Erynn Mangum is all about Paige Adler, a young woman entirely too dependable! She volunteers at church, works overtime at work, plans parties for friends, etc. But Paige soon learns an important lesson after being challenged by Tyler regarding her priorities. I love Paige Adler!!!

Prayer Box, The by Lisa Wingate was inspired by a conversation she had with an eighth grader. In this story, Tandi Jo Reese stumbles on dozens of decorated boxes that belong to her 91-year-old landlord while cleaning out the house. Inside are a lifetime of stories scribbled down that are meant to be treasured. Now why can't things like this happen to me?!? You may be inspired to begin writing your stories down for the younger generations in your family, too.

Quarryman's Bride, The by Tracie Peterson is the second independent story of this series, Land of Shining Water. Emmalyne Knox has given her heart to Tavin MacLachlan but when tragedy strikes her family, her father forbids her marriage to him. Bitter and anger change Tavin MacLachlan and when their paths cross again, Emmalyne is taken back by Tavin's hostility. But change is coming to the Knox family and you'll notice it in Luthias Knox. This is a story of pure redemption set in 1897.

Reign: The Chronicles of Queen Jezebel by Ginger Garrett is book three in the Lost Loves of the Bible Series. I love the intrigue and the fascinating evidence uncovered by archeologists that you'll find woven throughout this story. Garrett's talent at bringing Jezebel to life is riveting and attention grabbing!

Scraps of Evidence by Barbara Cameron is part of the Quilts of Love Series where "every quilt has a story." Tess Villanova has dreamed of getting into law enforcement ever since her best friend Samantha in high school was murdered. The killer was never found and Tess enlists the aid of her new partner to go over the evidence with fresh eyes. A missing necklace, a bag of scraps and a quilt that seems to agitate her Aunt Kathy has Tess unraveling clues to a serial killer who will kill again to keep his secrets hidden. This story had me on the edge of my seat especially when Tess confronts the killer!

Secret Keeper, The by Beverly Lewis is the fourth story in the Home to Hickory Hollow series. Jennifer Burns has exchanged her modern life for the Old Order Amish life. Her family is shocked and the people of Hickory Hollow are curious and some, dubious of her intentions. Lewis does such a fantastic job of taking her readers into Jennifer's head and heart as she faces challenges and dilemmas in her new life.

Small Town Girl by Ann H. Gabhart takes readers back in time to 1941. Fans will recognize Kate Merritt from Gabhart's Angel Sister and she's all grown up now! I love Gabhart's style of writing---her characters are so likable and her stories will resonate with your heart. In this story, Kate is in love. Unfortunately, she's in love with the man her sister is marrying! Jay Tanner the best man can't help but notice Kate; however, her friend Carl Noland is the one everyone in Rosey Corner hopes to see her marry. But Kate has other ideas!

When the Morning Glory Blooms by Cynthia Ruchti weaves the story of three different women from three different eras together. Becky is taking care of her daughter's baby boy. Ivy meets Anna while caring for her at a nursing home and decides to record her stories. This fascinating and moving story spans generations from 1890 (Anna), then to 1951 (Ivy) and finally to 2012 (Becky) and will have you hooked!

Unveiling Grace: The True Story of How We Found Our Way Out of the Mormon Church by Lynn Wilder is eye-opening, honest and a great resource for sharing your faith with Mormons. For more than 30 years, Wilder and her family were devout Mormons. She chronicles her journey and offers insight into Mormonism. I found the resource guide at the back of the book helpful as Wilder compares the doctrine of Mormonism and what Scripture says. This is a must read for any follower of Jesus!

Note from me:

Happy New Year, Dear Reading Friends!!!

The year has just started and it’s been busier than ever! Are you feeling the same?!? Ever since we’ve moved, it’s been challenging finding the time to sit and read or watch a movie to review, so I’m learning to savor the short moments of free time I find :o) I may have to change my pseudo motto from  “Life is short.  Dessert first” to “Life is short. Books & movies first!” Ha! Ha!

Last night I was on the phone with my dear friend Grace H., the wife of a retired pastor.  When I got off the phone at 11pm, I was encouraged and energized (she has that effect on everyone!)! If I’m half as inspiring, encouraging and entertaining as Grace is when I grow up, then I’ll be a happy camper :o) Do you have a friend like Grace in your life? As I grow older, I want to surround myself with friends who are wise and have walked with God longer. They remind me to that every day is a gift from God and making every moment count for eternity will surpass anything this world has to offer.

It’s why I’m excited to share more Five-Star rated books and family-friendly resources with you in this new year. You can be encouraged, inspired, and challenged as you strive to go and make a difference.

Don’t forget that God has a plan for YOU. You are loved and were created for a purpose. Yes, your life has value!!! I encourage you to read Jeremiah 29:11-14a!!!

Read it. Believe it. Embrace it. Share it.

Blessings & Happy Reading!!!

All for a Song by Allison Pittman is a story that weaves between the present and the past.  This is the story of Dorothy Lynn Dunbar, a young woman who longs for more even though she is engaged and has a ready made home, church and ministry with her Pastor fiancee. When the opportunity comes to join a dynamic and charismatic evangelist as a soloist for her crusades, Dorothy Lynn takes the plunge. And she’s desperate to find her brother who is working in the movies in California. It’s the Roaring Twenties and you’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time as Dorothy Lynn experiences movies, music, daring clothing that fit her like a glove and other temptations! Will she ever return home after following her heart? I loved this story, the lesson of grace and Dorothy Lynn---and it ends perfectly.

Ashton Park  by Murray Pura captures his attention to detail in a story fans of Downton Abbey TV series will appreciate and love! This historical drama starring The Danforths of Lancashire (also the name of this series) follows them as they go through wartimes and through love and loss. It’s a charming series and I can’t wait until book two comes out in July!

Esther Cherrett, a young woman trained by her mother the skills to be a midwife, has to leave everything she holds dear to her heart in order to protect her family from scandal. Things are changing and for some, leaving Bliss Creek forever is the only option.

One Sunday by Carrie Gerlach Cecil is a story of hope and friendship that grabbed me from start to finish! Alice Ferguson, a celebrity tabloid editor with her own business has climbed her way to the top in Hollywood. But a one-night stand resulting in a unexpected pregnancy forces her to take a leave from her stressful job in LA for the sake of her health. Pastor Tim and his wife and family live across the street (I want them to be my neighbors!) and Alice finds herself drawn to their family. A Sunday at their church challenges her perception and opens up a box of memories she’s been suppressing her whole life. You’ll travel back to Alice’s childhood and revisit some of the pivotal moments that have set her on the course she’s on now. And only the love of a Father can change the way she looks at herself.  I started this in the afternoon and couldn’t put it down until I finished it at 8pm! Alice’s story begins painful and raw and ends with hope! Look for One Sunday at the end of February!!!

Promise Me This by Cathy Gohlke takes you back to a time before WWI erupts. Annie Allen watches her brother Owen set sail on the Titanic never dreaming it would be her last time seeing him. Michael Dunnagan vows to watch over Annie and help bring her over to New Jersey.  And then the unexpected happens. When Michael is given a second chance at life because of Owen’s sacrificial gift, he struggles to comprehend the tragedy. I was captivated by Gohlke’s story. This is a powerful story of hope that was lost and then found, love that crosses the oceans and dreams that come true.  Finally. This one is definitely a keeper!

Waiting for Spring by Amanda Cabot is the second book in the Westward Winds Series. It’s 1880’s in Wyoming and Charlotte has reinvented herself hoping the Baron gives up looking for her. As a widowed dressmaker, she must make a life for herself and her little boy born with a disability while staying under the radar. In this one, love and romance are in the air but for some, it’s all for the wrong reasons! You’ll also find some suspense and danger so hang tight because there’s a happily-ever-after ending! I love that :o)

YA FICTION & NON-FICTION

The Fairest Beauty by Melanie Dickerson is another enchanting twist of the fairy tale classic Snow White. I love Sophie! She’s beautiful, warm-hearted, hard-working and trapped until a mysterious nobleman informs her who she really is.  And then the adventure begins. I love Dickerson’s Cottage of Seven (the home of seven hospitable dwarfs who need help in the housekeeping department!) and the medieval time period this is written in.  You’ll love this!

Judge by RJ Larson is the second book in her fantasy series, Books of the Infinite. In this one, Ela of Parne, the prophet of the Infinite is being sent on a separate leading to return home---away from her beloved Kien Lantec. He’s been given an order from the Infinite that doesn’t fit his role as a military judge-in-training. When the two meet, Ela has just seen a horrifying vision that shakes her to the core about her mission. Ela warns Kien that he will be tested and so the adventure begins!

Starflower by Anne Elisabeth Stengl is the enchanting fourth book in the series, Tales of Goldstone Wood. It’s not difficult to see why Stengl has been the winner of the 2011 & the 2012 Christy Award for her debut novel and for Visionary. Her writing is absolutely captivating and readers of fantasy will embrace this story, too! Lady Gleamdren, the fairest of all, has been kidnapped by a dragon-witch, put in a tiny iron cage and the whereabouts of the Flowing Gold is at stake. Meanwhile, a maiden is caught up in an enchanted sleep and keeps dreaming while the Black Dogs are after their prey…

30 Days to Becoming a Woman of Prayer by Stormie Omartian gives you tools to connect with God in a meaningful way. I love Stormie and her passion for prayer! In her words, Stormie says, “Freedom, wholeness, and true success can only be found when you are living a praying life. That means walking so close to God that He can keep you away form danger and guide you where you need to go.” This book was meant for you.

Fearless Daughters of the Bible: What You can Learn from 22 Women Who Challenged Tradition, Fought Injustice and Dared to Lead by J. Lee Grady takes a look at 22 gifted, empowered women God uses from the Bible and in today’s world. Don’t begin this book without first reading the Introduction where J. Lee Grady hilariously talks about  how he’s been “drowning in a sea of estrogen” for more than two decades with his wife and four daughters! Questions are at the end of each chapter designed for women by themselves or for small group discussion. I love his “A Message from Your Heavenly Father” and how he identifies six types of dysfunctional fathers and shows how God is the perfect Father. Grady encourages women that God is enabling his daughters to do amazing things in this world. He points out overlooked gifts God gives each of His daughters and how they can be used to live fearless, empowered and purposeful. Wow! This is a must read for any woman!!!

The Power of a Praying Wife Devotional Journal by Stormie Omartian will inspire you with Scripture to help you grow in your faith. Short prayers and Scripture are found throughout this journal as you write down your thoughts, hopes and prayers for your husband. It’s a book I want to use this year so I hope you’ll join me in praying for our spouses.

What Your Husband Isn’t Telling You: A Guided Tour of a Man’s Body, Soul, and Spirit by David Murrow is insightful, challenging and thought-provoking. Once I started reading this, I couldn’t put it down! I love his writing style! Don’t skip the introduction---Murrow is pretty frank in his “Reality check” section. Murrow helps women get into the “head” of men and I have to say, things are starting to make sense! If I were back in Cali, I would definitely use this book for my girls’ Bible study. Friends, you can know the truth about the male brain and the role it plays in our husband’s behavior! This is definitely worth checking out :o)

A Woman’s Daily Walk with God by Elizabeth George shares short little devotions for the busy woman. You’ll find 182 entries that will give you a word from God, a promise from Him and a prayer for you to pray.

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2012

A Note from Me:

Happy Post-Thanksgiving and Merry Pre-Christmas, Reading Friend!!!

I decided to combine November and December's newsletter together to minimize my stress of trying to do it all!!! And already, I feel so much better!!! But don't worry, I intend to post updates of new reviews throughout the month so you'll have lots of ideas for Christmas gifts :o)
Can you believe we made it through another year together?!? I feel like so much has happened in 2012 and it still seems surreal sometimes that we're no longer in soCal. Our tree isn't up yet but we brought up the box and tree skirt from the storage nook under the stairs. I found all the pieces to our Little People Nativity Set (set up on the kitchen island temporarily), our Playmobile Nativity Set (set up on the piano) and all our Advent Calendars (hanging on the door and set up on the dining table) so it's beginning to look a little more like Christmas every day :o)
I hope you'll join me in celebrating the gift of Jesus in everyday moments throughout this month. When I wrap presents, I want to praise Him for sending us Jesus and His gift of eternal life.  As I send out Christmas cards and receive them, I want to thank God for the gift of friends and family.  We have so much to be thankful for, don't we?!?
Thank you, God, for the plans You have for our life!!! You'll find this promise in Jeremiah 29:11-14a.

Read it.  Believe it.  Embrace it.  Share it.

Blessings & Happy Reading!!!

A Wild Goose Chase Christmas by Jennifer AlLee is the second book in the Quilts of Love Series where you’ll find that “every quilt has a story.”  In this one, Izzy Fontaine receives a beautiful quilt from her late grandmother connected with a mystery. The Wild Goose Chase pattern quilt is supposed to lead to a great treasure and Izzy must figure out what her grandmother has in mind before her greedy brother finds the treasure.  But does the quilt belong to her or to the local museum curator who claims he has a letter of intent from her grandmother? It’s up to Izzy to figure things out before it’s too late! I loved the epilogue---Izzy’s plan for the quilt is perfect!

Against the Tide by Elizabeth Camden is a high-stakes drama that is engaging (more like addicting!) and compelling. Lydia Pallas is gifted, witty and determined to rise above poverty. But when she becomes involved doing translation work for Lt. Banebridge, Lydia learns about the hidden passion Bane has for fighting opium and the professor. I love the witty banter between Lydia and Bane---they’re a match made in Heaven except for the fact that Bane has vowed never to get attached because of his enemies. When Lydia accepts a life-threatening assignment, you will find yourself on the edge of your seat as she courageously does what it takes to complete it.  But the real courage comes when she has to face the demons of her… I don’t want to give it away! But trust me when I say you’ll love this one, too!!!

Beyond the Storm by Carolyn Zane starts a new series called Quilts of Love: Every Quilt Has A Story.  In Beyond the Storm, a terrible tornado sweeps through Abigail Durham’s quaint community.  After the tornado, the survivors begin to clean up and search for loved ones.  I love how chivalrous Justin is toward Abigail! And I love how the community of Rawston bands together at Selma Tully’s and gather pieces of fabric found in the debris to make something meaningful.  Zane paints a vivid word picture of being caught in a tornado and the horrible aftermath as survivors search for family and friends.  Okay, I totally wasn’t expecting the ending to affect me the way it did---it made me cry because it (the ending) was so touching!!! Zane wrote the perfect ending that I know you’ll love, too!!!

Chasing The Wind by Pamela Binnings Ewen is set in New Orleans in 1977.  Amalise Catoir has been given a second chance at life and she’s trying to figure things out.  When she’s invited to join the team for Project Black Diamond, Amalise can almost taste making partner at the law firm.  But the more she learns about Project Black Diamond, the more Amalise realizes that there’s more at stake than just a real estate deal.  As the story goes on, you’ll see Amalise taking a risk emotionally and vocationally reminding all of us that “we are responsible for both the things we do and also for the things we don’t.”  Love, mystery & suspense are just a few elements you’ll find in this one---it’s definitely getting five stars from me!!!

Come to the Table by Neta Jackson, a SouledOut Sisters novel (book 2!), is everything I expected---authentic, great plot, wonderful characters you already know and love (and new ones to get acquainted with!), real dialogue and power insight. Kat's faith and joy are contagious! She lives out her faith loud and feels led to start a food pantry at church.  But not everyone is on board. Uh oh. Plus, as always, there are other complications going on and Kat has to step back and search her heart. I love Neta's stories because she makes me think deeper and challenges me in ways I never expected! This is definitely a Five Star read!

Courting Cate by Leslie Gould is the first book in the series The Courtships of Lancaster County and I LOVED it!!! Cate Miller has a prickly personality while her sister, Betsy has attracted most of the bachelors in Lancaster County! Now their father has made an edict: Betsy cannot get married before Cate does. Betsy is determined that Cate cooperates because she wants to marry Levi! When Pete Treger comes to town, it appears that things may be looking up for Cate because he ask to court her. But, of course, complications and misunderstandings come and Cate makes a decision that changes everything. And things go from bad to worse. I couldn’t help but cry so get those Kleenexes out.  I loved how this ended for Cate!!!

Full Disclosure by Dee Henderson is her first novel in more than five years and Oh my stars, you will be completely captivated. I couldn’t put this one down. I didn’t finish my Christmas cards (they’re still not finished!), left the dishes in the sink and forgot to start the washing machine!!! Yes, it’s that good. There are so many layers to Ann Silver’s character that you’ll keep learning new things about her as Paul Falcon discovers. He’s the FBI’s top murder cop and the heir to the Falcon empire. This is a romantic suspense with so many twists and turns in the plot that you have to be fully engaged to get the full experience! For years, Paul has been trying to solve a case involved 30 murders hits by the lady shooter.  When Ann, the Midwest Homicide Investigator comes in and hands over a code she’s managed to break involving the middle man, Paul is sufficiently intrigued. Murder, secrets and confessions---ingredients for the perfect read!!!

Gideon’s Call by Peter Leavell is based on a true Civil War event where you’ll be inspired by Tad, an young slave boy who rises above the ugliness of life and fufills his dreams.  It was difficult to read this without choking up because of the injustice of slavery found in these pages.  Leavell takes you on a journey that will tear you up emotionally and then inspire you with hope as you read about one brave young man who does what he can to make a difference.

Living in Harmony by Mary Ellis had my attention for three hours straight.  Unfortunately, unbeknownst to me, while I was reading about Amy and Nora King’s new life in Harmony, Maine, my chicken soup (yes, I forgot I had a pot on the stove!) evaporated and the chicken and pot were burnt to a crisp! So, here’s my word of advice… cooking and reading don’t necessary go hand in hand, so avoid cooking accidents by staying away from a good story! In this one, two sisters suffer a tragedy that takes both of their parents. Amy and John are set to marry in November, but decide they need to relocate to Harmony, Maine to start a new life away from the difficult memories and the expense of living in a tourist driven place.  Nora, the younger sister goes with them to start a new life because she’s tired of the young men in her district. But things are different in Harmony, Maine compared to their Amish district in Lancaster, PA and both girls must find a way to adjust to the stricter order in Harmony.  Amy longs for family while Nora longs for the forbidden. Things get tense when Amy reaches out to her shunned aunty and when John crosses a line, everything changes. Personally, I couldn’t stand John’s lack of grace, his controlling and superiority attitudes, so I’m glad his deeds were discovered! I love Amy and totally empathized with Nora’s need for freedom! Happy reading :o)

My Stubborn Heart by Becky Wade is a romantic story that you’re going to fall in love with!!!  Matt Jarreau is tall, dark and devastatingly handsome.  And single.  Sigh (the good kind!).  It’s so romantic!!! But there isn’t any woman who can compete with the memory of his beautiful wife who died young with cancer.  And he’s angry with God which is an issue Kate is determine to help him through.  Even at the cost of her heart.  You’ll have to read this---it’s a beautiful story about faith, love and waiting for God’s best…in His perfect time.

Not in the Heart by Chris Fabry is a riveting story that will have you on the edge of your seat with its suspenseful drama---there’s murder, a dying boy, a man destined to die for a crime he insists he didn’t commit, a conspiracy and much more!  Trumen Wiley is a first class jerk.  He’s insensitive, a coward and selfish!!! Aaarrrggghhh! My heart goes out to Ellen (his wife) and Oleta Conley as they shoulder the burden of being a single parent to their children.  I started this book in the morning and couldn’t put it down until I was finished the story late this afternoon! It was so engrossing I had to re-read the the final chapter again to savor the ending! I love, love, love the message of redemption that Chris cleverly weaves into this fast-paced and unforgettable drama.

Path of Freedom by Jennifer Hudson Taylor is another book in the Quilts of Love Series where “every quilt has a story.” Flora’s mother has made a beautiful quilt that is a secret map and now she, her sister and a childhood nemesis must go on a mission to get their cargo safely to freedom.  But Flora has trust issues with Bruce Millikan and this risky mission may require more than she can give.  Her childhood scars run deep and I couldn’t help but feel for Flora as she struggles with her feelings of pain and resentment toward Bruce! As I read this story about the Underground Railroad, I wish I could have had a part in harboring runaway slaves or transporting them to safety, too.

Submerged by Dani Pettrey is one of those stories that will keep you up all night! As the first book in a new series called Alaskan Courage, this suspenseful romance brings danger, murder and historic relics to the small town of Yancey. Bailey Craig is running from her past and returning to Yancey forces her back to the very town she has vowed never to return to again.  But when her late aunt’s research and several murders all seem to tie in, Bailey may be the only one to unlock the key to the mystery.  But time is ticking and Bailey and the McKenna family must figure out the clues before another murder is committed! You’ve got it all---faith, danger, romance and suspense---this is one you’re going to be reading by the edge of your seat!!!

Taming the Wind by Tracie Peterson is the conclusion of the Land of the Lone Star Trilogy.  After barely surviving her crazy husband’s attempt on her life, Clarissa Lowe and her daughter must find a way to survive on their own.  Tyler Antherton is responsible for rescuing Clarissa and longs to provide a future for the young widow.  Unfortunately, Clarissa is protective of her heart until she realizes Tyler is everything she cares about.  But is it too late? While the men are on a cattle drive, the women experience their worse nightmare and Tyler will have to risk his life for the woman he comes to love.  This historical romance with a touch of danger and suspense will keep you entertained!

The Air We Breathe by Christa Parrish is a story about every mom’s nightmare and how one person can impact another deeply through a godly and loving example.  You follow the lives of several characters in this story and in the end, you’ll see how they all fit together.  First, there’s Molly Fisk, a seventeen-year-old girl who’s life is ruled by anxiety and secrets.  Then there’s Claire Rodriguez, a woman hurting from an accident that claims the lives of her three children.  You’ll also meet little Hanna Suller, a witness and victim of a horrendous nightmare that takes away her words until… wait, I can’t tell you everything! Just know that this is a gripping story that is impossible to put down.  Thank goodness for the way everything turns out in the end!

The Amish Bride by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould is book three in The Women of Lancaster County Series.  This is a story that begins with a mystery which will captivate you to the very end! Ella Bayer is a young Mennonite woman in love with an Amish man and it seems like everyone in the family is trying to keep them apart.  So she comes up with a scheme which will allow her to get what she wants even if it means deceiving the ones she loves most.  And of course, it backfires.  I love the Ella at the end of the story---it’s neat watching her evolve from a selfish young woman to a woman of character who is willing to change and grow in her faith!

The Face of Heaven by Murray Pura is the second book in the series, Snapshots in History where in this story, Amish families are caught up in the war against slavery.  This story begins with the discovery of two runaway slaves.  Lyndel pleges to protect them but later, things happen against her intentions and the images of the two men and their horrible circumstances burn in her heart forever.  Pura has a way of drawing his readers into the hearts of Lyndel and Nathaniel as they struggle about the war---something their religion is clearly against.  Ultimately, it’s God’s love that propels them to risk shunning as they serve their country.  You’ll go into the battlefields with them, hurt with them when their families turn away from them in the beginning and breathe a sigh of relief at the end when love, forgiveness and restoration

The Hidden Flame by Davis Bunn & Janette Oke captures first-century Judea in Jerusalem.  The followers of the Way are growing and the religious rulers are threatened by their popularity.  Both Davis & Janette have done an amazing job re-creating what life was like for the believers as they share what they have, listen to the teachings of Peter and Stephen and see miracles happening everyday! Reading this made me feel like I climbed into the pages of my New Testament! This is book two in the series, Acts of Faith—I loved reading how Janette and Davis got together to write this series.  It’s a fascinating process!

The Matchmakers of Butternut Creek by Jane Myers Perrine is the delightful follow-up to the first book in the series, the Welcome Committee of Butternut Creek.  You’ll find the Widows, a hilarious and nosey, but well-intentioned group of ladies back on the trail to matchmaking Pastor Adam Jordan.  Their goal to get him married is a team effort and Adam’s patience toward them is admirable! But the woman he’s interested in has issues from her past and suddenly, Adam’s not sure if they’re on the same page.  Don’t you just hate that?!? Butternut Creek is a quaint little town you’ll fall in love with and finding out what happens in book 3 is something I look forward to sharing with you!!!

The Next Target by Nikki Arana deals with a relevant issue many of us are unaware of --- terrorism on American soil toward Christian Muslims by Radical Muslims.  Austia is running an outreach to American Muslims to help them with ESL classes and job placements but her real reason for ministering to the Muslim people is to win them to Christ.  But she has no idea that Radical Muslim extremists are targeting her ministry and it’s only a matter of time for Austia.  This suspenseful drama will capture your heart and open your eyes to the life-threatening reality Muslims face when they turn their lives over to Christ.  I totally had no idea that things like this are happening in our country.  Friends, we are living in scary times.  Pray and find out what level of involvement God wants from you and I’ll do the same, too.

Unconditional by Eva Marie Everson is a story inspired by “Papa Joe” (Joseph Bradford), a man with a mission to be a father figure through his Elijah’s Heart ministry for poor children in Nashville. This novel is based on the movie that released in September. When award-winning children’s author Samantha Crawford experiences a tragic loss, she is consumed by her grief and anger and prepares to end her life.  You can’t help but hurt for Sam as she grieves over her loss and obsession with tracking down the murderer.  But her intentions are detoured as she stumbles upon a hit and run accident involving a small child.  This story is inspiring and uplifting---it’s a real story of second chances and changed lives! I loved it!!!

Westward Hearts by Melody Carlson is the first book in her new series, Homeward on the Oregon Trail where adventure, history, romance and more rule these pages! I was caught up in Elizabeth Martin’s story from the very beginning and couldn’t wait to go with her to Orgeon! You’ll join Elizabeth as she and her family get their wagons ready for their journey and purchase supplies needed for the trail.  Melody’s skillful writing talent has the ability to draw us into her stories with her characters.  In this one, I was transported into 1854 traveling in a wagon train where Elizabeth and her family and a host of other colorful characters come together. I can’t wait for book two so I can continue my adventures with Elizabeth!!!
YA FICTION

Blue Autumn Cruise by Lisa Williams Kline is the third book in this popular series, Sisters in All Seasons where the relationship between two stepsisters is featured.  Teens will get to see the ups and down of the sister’s relationship as they navigate through family, a parent’s divorce and encounter situations that will test their delicate sisterly bond! I really like how each chapter is the viewpoint of either Diana or Stephanie and I can hear their voices throughout every moment of their time together.  In this one, the girls are on a family cruise where Diana meets Stephanie’s favorite cousin Lauren for the first time.  The two clash from the get go even though Stephanie is doing everything in her power to keep the peace and include Diana. When Diana (the animal lover) discovers an endangered iguana and uncover some disturbing evidence about illegal activity, important decisions have to be made. For the first time, all three girls are working together. I really liked what I read here---both characters are very believable in their personalities and I have no doubt that many teens in blended families will be able to identify with Diana and her Moronic Mood-o-Meter or with Stephanie, who’s always trying to find a way to keep the peace.

Right Where I Belong by Krista McGee is loosely based on the story of Ruth. Natalia Lopez is disillusioned about love after watching her father jump from one marriage to the next one.  When he announces his intentions to divorce his latest wife, Maureen, Natalia feels compelled to leave her home in Spain and relocate with her stepmom to Florida.  Natalia has a deep hunger to learn more about God and how to share her faith with her friends and family in Spain, so she’s excited to be going to a Christian school and attending Bible classes.  But immersing herself in a new culture, lifestyle and new school brings on the homesickness and Natalia’s stepmom spends her days crying over her divorce and questions her faith.  It’s so not what Natalia was expecting! Girls are going to love Natalia and get an idea on what it’s like to move to another country and learn the language, culture and more!
The Blue Door by Christa Kinde is the first in a new angel series called Threshold.  Fourteen-year-old Priscilla “Prissie” Pomeroy is the heroine in this one and middle school graders will love the twists and turns of this gripping suspense novel about spiritual warfare, angels, demons and… a strange door.

The Embittered Ruby by Nicole O’Dell is the second book in the Diamond Estates Series.  Sixteen-year-old Carmen Castillo is out of control.  She’s angry that she’s no longer living in a beautiful home.  Instead, her father has a new girlfriend and her mother takes Carmen and her two younger sisters to Hackensack, NJ where they live in a grungy apartment in a seedy area.  Now, it seems like she hurts and manipulates the ones she loves most and comes up with a plan to create a family of her own with Nate.  But her plan backfires and Carmen is sent to Diamond Estates to get help.  She’ll get the help she needs if she’s willing to make some wise choices… but will she?

The Shadowed Onyx by Nicole O'Dell is the latest book in the Diamond Estate Series. This book covers witchcraft and shows the power of evil pretty explicitly. In this one, Joy Christianson struggles with depression.  She caught her best friend and boyfriend kissing and then later, she stumbles on her best friend's suicide. Life can't get any worse.  But then, a new group of friends introduce her to a "spirit companion" and Joy finds comfort that she's being watched over.  Unfortunately, she delves deeper into witchcraft and can't find a way out.  I like that that there are study guide questions in the back of every book in this series.  You can read this in a group and have an insightful discussion together.

OCTOBER 2012

A Note from Me:

Dear Reading Friend,
Since this move across the country, I have learned that it's impossible to unpack and get a home organized, do the mom thing, blog, read and post my reviews in a timely matter!

I'll get my act together by November...maybe... well, one can only hope, right?!?

I've forgotten how frustrating it is to find things that have been packed by others when moving!  Aren't you glad that no matter where we may relocate to, God is always with us?  He can never be displaced and He promises that if we seek Him with all our hearts, He will be there! Check out His promise in Jeremiah 29:11-14a.

Read it.  Believe it.  Embrace it.  Share it.
Blessings & Happy Reading!!!

Tangled Ashes by Michèle Phoenix is an intriguing tale set in  beautiful Lamorlaye, France where the Nazi’s have taken over the stunning Meunier manor for a secret plan that only a select few know about. Look for it in January!
Too Far To Say Far Enough  by Nancy Rue is book 3 in The Reluctant Prophet Series where God uses a Harley riding woman to accomplish His purposes in the lives of broken souls around her.  I love Classic’s heart and her sense of humor! When God brings a broken child in her care, Allison aka Classic is drawn deeper into a ring of pure evil that only God can break.  There’s tension between her and Chief and until Allison can surrender and go the extra mile of love with those who hate her, her relationship is at a stand still.  Following the promptings of The nudge has Allison doing things she never thought possible.  But with God, all things are possible.  This is a suspenseful and gritty story about one woman’s absolute obedience to God! It just dawned on me that Allison is a modern-day Joan of Arc!
Unending Devotion by Jody Hedlund tells the story of one sister’s journey in search of her baby sister who’s made some poor choices along the way.  Lily Young is determined to rescue her sister and others like her no matter the risk. You can’t help but admire her spunk and courage in the face of danger!  Hedlund does an excellent job of drawing in her readers.  I was hooked from the start! This story is set in 1883 and fans of historical fiction and romance will love this one!
Whispers in the Wind by Lauraine Snelling is book two in the Wild West Wind Series.  Cassie Lockwood and her traveling family have finally found the ranch she owns half of. Her surprise arrival sends shockwaves to the Engstrom family who have been ranching the Bar E Ranch.  Has she finally found a home or will she be forced to continue wandering?  You’ll love Cassie Lockwood and her band of traveling companions as well as Mavis Engstrom and her generous hospitable heart.  This is the kind of story you’ll want to read in front of a lovely lit hearth with a cozy blanket---Lauraine’s talent of drawing in her readers will warm hearts!

Susan Choy Lee, your Reading Mom :o)

It got me thinking… this platform is what our country needs and I love Josiah’s approach to making decisions and signing off on policies! If only we had a presidential candidate like that… Wow, the end really surprised me---I totally wasn’t expecting it to end like that!
Tangled Ashes by Michèle Phoenix is an intriguing tale set in  beautiful Lamorlaye, France where the Nazi’s have taken over the stunning Meunier manor for a secret plan that only a select few know about. I liked how the chapters flipped between history to the present where the manor is being restored. Architect Marshall Becker is fighting his demons while trying to restore the manor for his client’s upcoming celebration.  But strange noises in the dark are keeping him up and secrets are intended to come to light.  You’re going to love this one, too!
